As the General Secretary of the Materials and Chemical Engineering (MACE) Graduate Student Association at the University of Kentucky for the 2023-2024 term, I spearheaded the strategic planning and execution of a diverse array of events designed to enrich the academic, professional, and social experiences of graduate students. Leading a dedicated team, I was responsible for ideating innovative initiatives and ensuring their seamless implementation, fostering a vibrant community for MACE graduate students.
The MACE Graduate Student Association plays a pivotal role in supporting students by creating opportunities for academic growth, professional development, and social engagement. Throughout the year, we organized workshops on cutting-edge research methodologies, career development seminars with industry leaders, and networking events that connected students with alumni and professionals in materials and chemical engineering. These initiatives helped students stay abreast of advancements in fields like nanotechnology, sustainable materials, and chemical processes, while also building essential skills in communication and collaboration. Socially, our events- ranging from cultural evenings to interdepartmental sports tournaments—cultivated a sense of community, encouraging peer support and work-life balance among graduate students navigating rigorous academic demands.
The highlight of my tenure was leading the organization of the MACE Symposium 2024, our flagship event that showcased the innovative research and talent within our department. I collaborated with renowned speakers from academia and industry to deliver keynote addresses, inspiring attendees with insights into emerging trends in materials and chemical engineering. I also spearheaded the organization of a 3-minute talk competition, where students distilled complex research into concise, impactful presentations, honing their ability to communicate science effectively. Additionally, I managed funding efforts, securing sponsorships and grants to ensure the event’s success, and coordinated with faculty and judges for poster presentation competitions, providing a platform for students to showcase their research and receive constructive feedback.
